seems to me that FOTM get their sharp edges rubbed off in practice (or subjected to pressure-thru-use at the industrial level) until what remains, if anything is a gem or simply the speck of sand that became the pearl.
Every Aesop’s fable or Canterbury tale or Lao Tzu aphorism is rendering of an essential truth of the human condition that endures after it has been “managed” into futility.
The insight remains and may have a moment when it is perfectly applicable. The underlying insights of things that get turned into fads, I’d submit are no different, but are simply earlier in the lifecycle of wisdon-generation.
Wisdom is what is left after the art crowd and science crowd have abandoned the once-promising FOTM.
Wisdom remembers how, at a deep level, good robust ideas endure and will have their use at some point, perhaps long after the enthusiastic, time-pressures, quick-fix, immediate gratification crowd (who, to be fair, are struggling to solve thorny problems in real time, with real consequences, and are genuinely motivated to find best solutions)
